Global warming does not affect all regions in the same way. But water scarcity in some areas can have a global impact – leading to wider instability and new waves of migration.
“I should say that climate change affects rainfall,” said Dr Shadad Attili, former Palestinian water minister. . Water is a basic human right. If people don’t have water, they will move to places where there is water. If people don’t have enough food, okay, they’re going to move to places where the food creates internal instability. It also creates regional instability. So it is serious. It’s really serious “.
But if there is political will, is there a solution?
“There should be a Green Fund,” says Dr Attili. “And the funding should go to developing countries to deal with the consequences of climate change: adaptation, mitigation and everything in between. We need to encourage water supplies. We need to have better governance, agricultural irrigation systems. We also need to reform all sectors. In addition to this, we must reform the water sector in order to reduce losses and keep every drop of water in our region.
